A tight-knit community in Lincoln is mourning the loss of 17-year-old Derek Klotz, who died in a tragic car accident late Friday evening. According to Lincoln Police, Derek was a passenger in a vehicle that veered off the road and struck a tree near Fletcher Avenue and 70th Street at approximately 12:45 a.m.
Authorities say the driver, also a teenager, lost control of the car after swerving to avoid a deer. The car left the roadway, and despite efforts to save him, Derek succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Two other occupants survived but sustained serious injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital.
Community members described Derek as a bright, ambitious young man who was heavily involved in school life. He was a junior at Lincoln High School and known for his love of music, soccer, and his close circle of friends. Many classmates expressed their grief on social media, calling him a “kind soul” and “a friend to everyone.”
Lincoln Police and Lancaster County are reportedly investigating the crash. No formal charges have yet been filed, pending the conclusion of the investigation. Authorities have cautioned that while the deer avoidance is the preliminary explanation, further factors may emerge as more evidence is gathered.
A memorial service is being planned by Derek’s family, with details expected to be announced soon. The family has requested privacy during this difficult time. Local students are rallying to support them — some are setting up a scholarship in Derek’s name, hoping to turn tragedy into a legacy that helps other young people pursue their dreams.
