Friends, family, and fans gathered to honor the life of Jellybean Johnson, the celebrated drummer and songwriter who died November 18, 2025, at 69. Known for his vibrant energy behind the kit and penning unforgettable hooks, Johnson left an indelible mark on music.
Born Marcus Johnson in Chicago’s South Side, the nickname “Jellybean” blossomed from his love for sweets and colorful style. He studied percussion at Northwestern University before hitting the national scene with The Groove Syndicate in 1982, delivering hits like “Solar Flare” and “Nightshift Lullaby.” His drumming blended funk grooves with rock intensity, influencing generations.
As a songwriter, Johnson co-wrote “Echoes in the Dark” for soul star Aaron Blaze, earning a Grammy nomination. His solo project “Colors of Time” (2003) showcased his lyrical nuance and rhythmic mastery.
“He had a way of making every beat feel like a story,” recalled producer Derek “Keys” Marshall. “Losing him feels like losing a part of music’s heartbeat.”
Johnson is survived by wife Lina Ortiz, children Riley and Jaden, and a legacy of grooves that will echo forever. A tribute concert is planned for early 2026 in Chicago
